The English Center

Results

The ages and goals of the thousands of English Center students have been as diverse as their cultures. Men and women in their thirties and forties who needed to learn English to enhance their careers have studied with us. Seventeen and eighteen year old high school graduates who wanted to go to college in the United States have also found that our curriculum met their needs. Immigrants of all ages who needed to learn English to join the Bay Area workforce have committed to a year of study in the Career Advancement Program. The Center has been able to meet the career, educational and personal needs of such a wide variety of students because of its purpose, environment and programs.

The English Center successfully:

Trains more than 300 English language learners annually in its on-going programs

Maintains a placement rate of graduates at 75% or above, in careers and in higher education

English Center students…

Gain 10 to 15 points on the University of Michigan placement test per proficiency level attained

Gain an average of three proficiency levels in their English language skills, progressing from, for example, low-intermediate to low advanced level or from high intermediate to high advanced with program completion

Enroll directly in university academic courses upon completion of the high advanced level of study (level 6)

Compete successfully in English-speaking work environments in careers with advancement potential after graduation
